What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is a form of orthodontic treatment used to treat tooth gapping, overcrowding, crooked teeth, and even bite misalignment.
Invisalign® is not like traditional braces, although this treatment is just as effective. Invisalign® therapy uses clear aligner trays to straighten teeth. These trays are custom made to fit your smile.
The trays gradually adjust your teeth in stages. After each stage, you receive a new set of trays that continue to move your teeth further and further into proper alignment.
Benefits of Invisalign® From Our Oakbrook Terrace Dental Office
There are numerous benefits to Invisalign®, especially when compared to traditional metal braces. Some of these benefits include:
- Invisalign® allows you to undergo orthodontic treatment discreetly. The clear aligner trays are practically undetectable.
- The aligner trays are removable. This means you can comfortably eat and brush your teeth without metal wires and brackets getting in the way.
- Invisalign® may be more suitable than braces for cavity-prone patients.
- Invisalign® is more comfortable than traditional braces.
- There are no food restrictions when you undergo Invisalign® treatment.
- You won’t have to worry about breaking any brackets, as the aligner trays are made out of sturdy plastic.
- You will spend less time at the dentist office. Braces require tightening adjustments every few weeks. With Invisalign®, you simply receive a new set of trays at each stage of treatment.

How Invisalign® Works
If you’re considering Invisalign®, the first step is to schedule an appointment for a consultation. At Smile Big Dental Specialists, we’ll examine your teeth and jaw structure before discussing your treatment options.
If you’re a good candidate for Invisalign®, we’ll start your treatment by taking impressions of your teeth. The impressions will be sent to a lab and they’ll be used to create your custom aligners.
Once your aligners are ready, you’ll return to our office to have them fitted. You’ll wear every set of aligners for about 2-4 weeks before moving on to the next set. You’ll need to wear them for 20-22 hours daily to achieve the best results. You should only remove them to eat and brush your teeth.
When Can I Expect to See Results?
Most people complete their treatment in about 6-12 months. However, each case is unique, and some patients with extensive dental issues may need to wear aligners for 18-24 months.
When you come in for your consultation, our orthodontists will give you a more accurate timeline of your treatment plan. Please schedule an appointment with our experienced orthodontists in Oakbrook Terrace today to learn more about this type of orthodontic therapy.
Less Time Spent at the Dentist
When you undergo Invisalign® treatment, you spend less time going to the dentist than you do when you have traditional braces. This is because the removable plastic trays are simply switched out in stages to improve your dental alignment. Braces, however, require monthly adjustments that are performed by your dentist.
How Much Does Invisalign® Cost?
The cost of Invisalign® will depend on the extent of your treatment. Our team will be able to give you a more accurate estimate during your consultation. In general, Invisalign® is comparable in cost to traditional metal braces.
Some dental insurance plans will also cover the expense. Our team can help you determine if your insurance will cover part or all of the cost of treatment.
We also offer financing options to make Invisalign® more affordable. We understand orthodontic care is a significant investment, so we want to make it easy for you to get the treatment you need.
Does Invisalign® Hurt?
Invisalign® is a simple, effective method for straightening teeth. Most patients report little to no discomfort while wearing their aligners. This is because, unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® doesn’t contain any uncomfortable wires or metal brackets.
You may still experience some dental soreness or tenderness when you start wearing your aligners or switch to a new set. If you do experience any discomfort, it should go away within a few days. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers to help alleviate discomfort.
